The Things We Use

Pencil Notepad

Forestry is taking grown trees, cutting them down and making them into things like the paper this AgMag is printed on, pencils you write with and lumber that houses are built with.

How much paper can be made from a tree?

The answer may surprise you. It’s almost impossible to know how much can be made from a single tree because all trees are different. But it’s estimated that one cord of wood can make:

  • 1,000–2,000 pounds of paper
  • 7,500,000 toothpicks
  • 942 100-page, hardcover books

Trees are a renewable resource, which means they can be planted again and again. Forests are also great for hiking, camping and providing wildlife a place to live!

A cord of wood is a measurement.

When wood is cut and stacked a cord of wood measures 4 feet high x 8 feet long x 4 feet deep.
