Kidney Beans from the Field to You!

kidney beans

Minnesota farmers grow a lot of kidney beans. They grow more kidney beans than any other state! Where do kidney beans come from?

1. Growing

In the spring, farmers plant kidney bean seeds. Over the summer, the seeds grow into plants with green pods. New beans grow inside these pods. In the fall, the pods turn brown. That means the beans are ready to harvest.

2. Harvesting

A big machine called a combine cuts the plants. The machine shakes the pods and takes out the beans.

3. Transportation

Trucks take the kidney beans from the farm to the processor.

4. Cleaning

At the processor, the kidney beans are dried and cleaned. This makes the beans safe to eat.

5. Beans in the Store

Your family can buy kidney beans at stores. Some beans are sold in bags. Some beans are cooked and put in cans.

6. At Home

Kidney beans are used to make chili, soup and salad.
