Pork Burgers were one of the burger options highlighted in a previous lesson. Pig farmers raise pigs that provide us with pork. Let’s meet a Minnesota pig farmer and learn how she cares for her pigs.
Caring for Her Pigs
Lisa Moldan is a proud pig farmer who lives near New Ulm, MN. She takes pride in the health and well-being of her pigs. Lisa’s grandpa always said, "If you take care of the animals, they will take care of you." Her grandpa’s words are still true to Lisa today as she puts in long hours of work for her pigs. On Lisa’s farm, the pigs are raised inside barns where advanced technology allows Lisa to control the pigs’ feed, water and climate. She can increase the temperature in the barns during the winter to keep the pigs warm. Lisa is able to control all of this technology from her phone so she can make sure her pigs are comfortable at all times.
But no amount of technology will ever replace the importance of Lisa being inside the barns with her pigs making sure they are healthy. Lisa says her favorite part of raising pigs is providing safe, nutritious food for families just like hers.
